I've been occasionally getting dinged for failing to hand-off a flight before issuing a frequency change.  It makes me, uh, utter strong words, because I have NEVER failed to hand-off an flight before issuing the frequency change.  Indeed, I wait until the flight turns green before I issue the freq change just to be sure it was accepted.  Tonight, I finally realized that the "non-compliance" message is completely bogus -- what it was seems to have been dinging me for was giving the flight the wrong frequency for sector.  THAT doesn't seem like it should be such a serious point deduction.  It's happened to me in the real world (and, more recently, on PilotEdge) and it's simply not a big deal.   The "wrong" sector controller redirects the traffic to the correct controller (or back to departure control) and things get sorted.

Why does the sim (a) issue such a misleading message, and (b) impose such a large penalty for this relatively trivial mistake?

In my experience this happens when just handing off using "C" hands the aircraft to the sector that the aircraft is currently under -- As opposed to the sector the aircraft would normally be handed to. Unless you stare at the tag to see what sector the aircraft is flashing to, you may assume that it has been accepted by another sector.

For this reason, I have turned off auto handoff (which works a little too good on internal sectors) and I also manually type the enroute sector I desire if it is questionable. A good example of this is MIA HEDLY departures. They can easily reach 16k before the R46 boundary. Thus, STARS will flash to R47 instead. So I just type R46 and force the issue.
