What does it mean when an aircraft's symbol is an asterisk? I don't know how to hand it off.

That's a radar echo that it not associated with any radar position (yet).

It most likely means you have forgotten to tell it that it's "radar contact" or you did but the speech recognition didn't pick up on it.

You're right, thanks.
I always heard that the "radar contact" command was unnecessary. I guess sometimes it is.

You don't need to say it when you take over planes already under radar control. Such as from another tracon controller or most centers.

But you should whenever you are the first controller taking up radar services for the plane. Takeoffs (both from controlled and uncontrolled airports) however should be told that they are radar contact.

There is at least one sector in the south part of Atlanta where the radar coverage is so bad that pilots will call in before you can see them. They need to be told" radar contact" when you can see them and take responsibility for separation.

If a plane in such a sector is flying out of coverage you need to do the opposite and say "radar service terminated..."

I believe that's also how you are supposed to handle aircraft that has visual on their uncontrolled destination. As they land VFR.

Thank you!

I have been playing the game for a few months now and with increasing success but did not know about the "*" procedures. Will try this out soon and see how the * change into my airspace symbols.

I have found that if you let an "*" plane go out of the sector that often you do not get penalties for it like "you forgot to handoff". Maybe that is normal.

thanks again.
